| I hunt high in order to ensure I don't get winded or spotted. This has worked well for me over the last few years. Now for the problem I just moved form hunting Georgia to hunting NJ. I now hunt Bow only and love it. I found out last year that though I am very good on the ground a tree and some height make a big difference. The first deer I saw last year was 30 yards or so and I placed a perfect shot she fell in 20 yards. After that it was all down hill. I did buy a range finder this year and found out I was wrong about my yardage guesses. Anyone have any other tips for me? By the way the range finder has the ARC technology which is good I hope since I hunt in very steep terrain.whick is good I hope since I hunt in very steap terrian. | |

| This is the first thing I do when I get in the stand. I range my surrounding or where I think the deer will show. I don't ribbon the trees but keep a mental note of the range. | |

Are you refering to thinking about the exit point of your arrow?

Are you refering to thinking about the exit point of your arrow? I range the area asap after getting in the tree too. If you shoot a deer in the middle of the vital area with a flat trajectory the arrow will pass through straight to the other side...hitting all the organs. When you move higher and higher the arrow trajectory changes and even if you hit the deer square in the middle of the vitals the shot has a chance to miss some of the organs because the arrow path is no longer flat. I always aim a touch high when shooting from high up. You have to think about the arrow passing through. not just where it impacts.

| When i take shots, i try and aim where I think the arrow will exit the deer. Obviously on something like a quartering away shot, you wanna aim right behind the opposite shoulder. When I am up high in the tree, I still like aiming for the middle of the vitals. Chances are if they jump the string, you will still end up with a double lung or spine shot. If they don't jump the string you will tend to blow through both lungs and probably even get heart! | |
